The launch of mega-constellation satellites in low earth orbit (LEO), has dramatically reduced the price of satellite data while simultaneously enabled miniaturisation of user communication devices. The CASSIS project leverages UK funding to develop a connectivity solution for use in vehicles, as the technical and economic barriers that existed in the past have now been lowered, enabling always-on, everywhere connectivity and associated services: Infotainment, Vehicle Management, and Data Analytics.
Connected and autonomous vehicles are not the future, they are the present. As consumer expectation for on-demand data services increases, the new market differentiators become: Access, Data rate, & Reliability.
By 2020 4G will cover 63% of the world’s population but only 37% of the landmass. That leaves huge areas where autonomy and critical services will not be accessible unless we harness the entirety of the connectivity that surrounds us, including satellite data, cellular and wifi.
