Barriers and Bridges to Uptake of Satellite Data: ‘MEO-AP’ workshop to develop a Marine EO Portal for Applications across Government

Date: 04/10/2016

Time: 10:30 – 17:00

Venue: Satellite Applications Catapult, Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire.

Vision:

Centralised ‘go-to’ hub mainstreaming Marine Earth Observation (EO) intermediate products that have highest relevance to government agencies.

Workshop objectives:

  • Communication from agencies to developers of Marine EO intermediate products about current challenges and barriers to uptake of EO
  • Round-table problem-solving discussion between relevant product developers and potential users
  • Cataloguing of the existing marine EO intermediate products with potential to answer Defra challenges for hosting on MEO-AP portal
  • Identification of products that are in development and have excellent potential for cross-cutting applications, but will require additional funding

Where EO has obvious benefits for Defra’s Marine Evidence Team:

  1. Planning & Marine Fisheries
    • Long-term impacts of climate change on stock distribution and abundance
  2. Healthy and Biologically Diverse Seas
    • Good Environmental Status (GES) by 2020
    • Intelligent management of water quality – e.g.: indicators of eutrophication
    • Integrated environmental assessment techniques
    • Incorporation of novel technologies into ongoing monitoring programmes
  3. Clean & Safe Seas
    • Engagement with remote sensing for efficient, spatially relevant marine monitoring
    • Monitoring/ mitigating risk from marine incidents (spills/ pollution)
    • Human movement, policing of marine protected areas
  4. Cross Cutting
    • Engagement with remote sensing for efficient, spatially relevant marine monitoring
    • Monitoring and/or mitigation of risk from marine incidents (spills and pollution)
    • Human movement and policing
