Project Description:

Weather-related extreme events not only have a negative impact on food security and supply, but they also affect the incomes of households working in the agriculture sector. The UK Space Agency and a consortium integrated by UK’s companies led by RHEA Group have joined forces with the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment and local NGOs to develop a Drought and Flood Mitigation Service (DFMS) that will help Ugandan farmers to respond to effects in agriculture effectively. The DFMS will use satellite and ground-based data combined with drought and flood models to produce and share better forecasts for the management of water resources.

The applicant will be part of the RHEA team, working together with different project partners consisting of commercial companies, NGO’s and governmental organisations.

During the project the successful candidate will:

  • Develop excellent software for use in field mapping, data collection, sensor networks, and more
  • Create tools that can classify sentinel data automatically and on demand
  • Autonomously design and implement high-quality web-based applications, RESTful API’s, and 3rd party integration
  • Implement tools to identify changes in a set of satellite images (change detection)
  • Solve and articulate complex problems with application design, development, and user experiences

Applicant Specification:

  • Background in IT, EO or a related discipline.
  • Experience in programming and data analysis.
  • Appetite to learn new skills: Machine Learning, Big Data, NoSQL
  • Excellent organisational skills

The Nitty Gritty:

8 weeks fixed term contract to be agreed with successful candidate but nominally with a start date around 26 June which is also the SPIN Induction day at Harwell. Salary is £1,500 per calendar month.
