The Future of In-Orbit Demonstration in the UK

Workshop background

The UK has a legacy of In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) initiatives supported by government funding. TechDemoSat-1 and UKube-1 were initiated in 2010 and launched in July 2014; AlSat Nano was agreed in 2014 and launched in September 2016; the current Catapult IOD programme was announced in 2016, with a first mission selected in November 2017 and due to launch in early 2019; and DSTL announced its space innovation programme earlier this year.

The above initiatives involve a wide range of the community and their needs cover diverse areas such as education and science, defence, technology and service demonstration. The projects are supported by government funding and in-kind contribution from industry and universities, together with satellite, launch, and operation providers. Unanimously, past and current missions have demonstrated and keep demonstrating real successes and demand for IOD.

To better characterise this demand (education, science, technology, commercial) and provision for IOD, we are inviting stakeholders of In-Orbit Demonstration to participate in a one-day workshop looking at the future of IOD in the UK.

Why attend

The purpose of this workshop is to identify the demand for future IOD missions in the UK, and to explore opportunities. In attending, you will be given the opportunity to share your needs, opinions and experiences, and to help shape future initiatives.

Who should attend

Organisations and individuals with a strong interest in IOD, looking to network and share their views on the need and provision for IOD. These could be – but not limited to –  universities, aspiring entrepreneurs, technology providers, potential sponsors.
