Information from satellite technologies has been used to facilitate exploration for natural resources for many years. The quality, availability and accessibility of data continues to grow as space technology improves. This mining sector workshop will highlight recent developments in satellite technologies, review current capabilities and explore other uses of these technologies in the mining industry.
Hosted by the Satellite Applications Catapult in association with the Cornwall Mining Alliance and the Camborne School of Mines, this workshop aims to bring together a wide range of stakeholders in the mining sector to discuss how satellite technologies could provide a platform for new collaborations.
For example, the Satellite Applications Catapult’s environmental monitoring platform concept brings together various forms of Earth Observation data and analysis techniques into a toolkit, which will enable organisations to plan for and monitor the impact of activities, such as mining and major construction projects over an extended period. Ground and aerial data will be assimilated into the platform with new ways to visualise the data.
Initial projects with organisations based in Chile are developing the concept into practical demonstrators to monitor mining operations and the environmental impact of mining activities. These have illustrated the potential for activities such as monitoring systems for Tailings Management Facilities, slope stability, subsidence and other ground movements, logistics, and impacts on vegetation.
Who should attend?
Professionals in the mining sector engaged in exploration, mining, mineral processing, environmental monitoring, social impacts, water and land management, data management, logistics, communications, visualisation, permits, policies and innovation.
The Satellite Applications Catapult is an independent innovation and technology company, created to foster growth across the economy through the exploitation of space. We help organisations make use of and benefit from satellite technologies, and bring together multi-disciplinary teams to generate ideas and solutions in an open innovation environment.
