Catapult Updates

1. IoD Programme Launch
a. Innovate UK and the Catapult have announced a £1.5 million collaborative research initiative to support 4 In-Orbit Demonstration missions. The first launch is planned for Q2 2017 with the other 3 every 6 months after this. This In-Orbit Demonstration programme offers an entire mission to promising payload for the cost of a launch. UK organisations are invited to submit their payload information on Catapult website. If you have any questions please contact:

2. Competitions:
a. The European Satellite Navigation competition, Europe’s biggest business ideas competition is looking for new ideas in the application of satellite navigation, positioning and timing technology. The winner of the UK region will receive £5,000 and business support and be entered into the overall competition prize with the chance to win an additional €20,000. In addition to the UK regional prize, there are a range of special topic prizes and a University Challenge. Submit your ideas online at and the closing deadline for entries is 30 June 2016.
b. The Catapult is supporting a Sustainable Living Challenge in the 2016 Copernicus Masters competition looking for innovative applications in Earth Observation data across agriculture, smart cities, natural resource management and sustainable oceans. The winner of the Catapult challenge will receive business support and a satellite Earth Observation data allocation from the European Commission to the value of €10,000. The Challenge winner will be entered into the overall competition draw with the potential to win an additional €20,000. Submit your ideas online at and the closing date for entries is 18 July 2016.

3. UBO
a. We are supporting activities at the Microsoft AzureCraft Tech Fest Family Day on 4 June, using the BBC micro:bit for nano-satellite experiment. This is a great opportunity to bring your family to come and play with technology and games. Please see here for more information and to attend. There is also an Azure developers Day on 3 June for anyone interested in the Microsoft cloud services. More information can be found here.
b. The IET is running a student and young professionals poster competition to discover new game-changing satellite applications, with the opportunity to win a place at the Reinventing Space Conference where you can present your work. More information can be found here. The deadline is 7 July.
