Satellite Applications Catapult announces finalists of European Satellite Navigation Competition UK Challenge

The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) is an annual international innovation competition that recognises the best ideas in the field of downstream applications based on satellite navigation, awarding the best services, products, and business ideas using these technologies in everyday life. Its mission is to spur the development of market driven applications based on satellite navigation technologies.

No matter at what stage a pioneering idea is, the ESNC and its network of partners provides support for innovative ideas, with the ultimate aim to turn them into real business cases. The ESNC is not only the prestigious competition for GNSS‐related ideas, but also serves as an effective Europe‐wide support mechanism for entrepreneurs and start-ups.

The Satellite Applications Catapult led the UK Challenge in partnership with, the UK Space Agency, Innovate UK, The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Airbus Defence & Space, Marks & Clerk MC and The Royal Institute of Navigation.

The three finalists selected are:

actiGo: The world’s first membership-free digital market-place for health and fitness activities. This is delivered through an innovative application which provides an interactive platform for users to discover new activities and facilities, while also providing two-way communication with coaches and fellow users.

Skignz Environment – Smart City Using Augmented Reality: A real time public information app utilising advancements in AR and GNSS. Users can explore AR maps through their smart devices and interact with building and services on screen to ‘annotate’ the world around them.

GNSS Spoofing Detection and Signal Quality Checking Within the User Receiver: GNSS is vulnerable to both environmental effects and malicious attacks. This product uses algorithms that can detect spoofing and interference via high frequency domain processing.

The winner will be announced on 4 December in Marseilles during the European Space Week. They will receive tailored business support, technical support from the UK competition partners and an introductory discussion on Intellectual property with Marks & Clerk, leading patent and trademark attorney.
