The Satellite Applications Catapult has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chilean National Mining Corporation, Empresa Nacional de Minería (ENAMI). The MoU provides the foundations for the two organisations to collaborate on future projects, with a major focus on sustained development within economic, social and environmental areas.
ENAMI supports small and medium sized mining companies by providing facilities, funding support and help to access new markets.
The signing took place at Expomin 2016 – The World Mining Exhibition and Congress for Latin America – which is taking place in Santiago, Chile this week. The Catapult, which has been working with several Chilean organisations since November 2013, is exhibiting alongside UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), to raise awareness of the potential uses of satellite data and technology for innovations in mining and environmental management.

Expomin provides a great opportunity for us to develop existing relationships, and build new ones in both Chile and elsewhere in Latin America.”
Trevor Hines, Head of the UKTI at the Santiago Embassy, said: “This is an extremely significant step in the UK’s growing relationship with Chile in the mining sector, enabling a whole series of work streams far into the future. The UK is looking forward to providing a whole spectrum of capability, helping Chile transform its mining-related economy in a sustainable way. We are looking particularly at environmental protection, with other positive social and economic impacts.”
Over the past two and half years, the Catapult has worked with several Chilean government departments and agencies, demonstrating the capabilities of satellite data and technology. It has also delivered collaborative projects on disaster management and land use risk assessment.
