Elaine is the innovation lead at Business Durham. She primarily works with science, technology and engineering businesses to help build useful connections, facilitate business solutions and bring ideas to commercial exploitation. To do this, she works with a wide network of businesses, support organisations, investors, funders and academic institutions. She has been involved in a many different areas of economic development and regeneration in the last 15 years: to name a few, these include digital, new and renewable energy, electric vehicles, tourism, housing, food and drink sectors. Elaine has also been a marketing and communication specialist, leading on various projects over the years. Currently, Elaine also manages an Interreg project, STEPHANIE (Space and photonics technology for market and societal challenges) in the UK, along with other project partners in Spain, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Belgium and Czech Republic. This project aims to develop policy improvements that will best position businesses to benefit from R&D investments within these areas.
Sylvia is a highly experienced business support officer. Her work with the Centre of Excellence has a key focus on managing project finance and uses expertise in systems and process development to ensure smooth financial management of projects. With a strong knowledge of procurement processes, Sylvia brings a number of skills to the team including time management, event management and overall customer first approach to providing client support.
Abbie has worked in marketing for a number of years in a variety of different sectors and joins the team relatively new to the space sector. Although new to the space sector, with a background in Sports Science Abbie understands the world of science, technology and research. Her previous roles include corporate communications for local authorities and customer services. Her work with the Centre of Excellence focuses on the promotion and marketing of the centre, including social media and monthly events.
John is hosted at RTC North and is the Enterprise Europe Network Internationalisation Advisor. He runs Northern Orbit, which is focused on brokering international opportunities for SMEs working across Space, Satellite, Aerospace & Defence and works alongside the North East Satellite Applications Centre of Excellence to encourage the international networking and collaboration of these sectors. Northern Orbit has the sole purpose of supporting SMEs to find international partnering opportunities and developing the northern supply chain for global opportunities within the sector.
Mark has recently spent over 4 years managing an innovation fund, supporting and helping stakeholder’s and companies commercialise ideas and ensure that these ideas are both sustainable and profitable. Mark has also spent a number of years in the Business support sector working intensively with both small and large businesses and helping them to access grants, funds and other much needed support. Mark joins us as Business Engagement and Opportunities Manager
Paul has over 15 years of experience working with the space sector, 11 of which have been spent leading the work of the Geospatial Research and Applications Centre of Excellence (GRACE) at the University of Nottingham. He is an experienced member of the geospatial community and has assisted many organisations and businesses to take advantage of geospatial and GNSS technologies through the provision of consultancy, training, testing and business incubation & acceleration. Paul was co-founder of Geomatic Ventures Limited, and has an MSc in Engineering Business Management. The East Midlands region is recognised as being already very strong in the space sector. RAP-MNE will have a regional office in Nottingham, with collaborative links to business support organisations based in Leeds and Durham. The ESA RAP-MNE is hosted by the Nottingham Geospatial Institute at the University of Nottingham.
Alan is an experienced Business Development Manager with a successful track record in both the Academic and commercial arena. His passion is to help organisations, particularly SMEs, to achieve their ambitions and to flourish as both an employer and a growing innovative business. With his background both in engineering and the commercial world his aim to connect businesses with expertise both technical and advisory for the benefit of all.
Emma Hatton is an Earth Observation consultant with over 17 years’ experience in the application of EO across government, academia, and industry. She has worked on creating solutions of all sizes, from bespoke analytics to near real-time processing of continental-scale data from the Copernicus satellites. As the former Head of Earth Observation in SCISYS UK Ltd, Emma understands how to build Earth Observation solutions across a wide range of sectors that are both successful and financially viable.
John Yates has 35 years of experience in the commercial space sector. After having held key satellite project management positions at SES-Astra in Luxembourg and Inmarsat in London he now provides independent expert advice on space policy and strategy and technical and business aspects of commercial satellite programmes. He is also co-Founder and Chairman of Helix Technologies Ltd and a Non-Executive Director and founder-investor at Oxford Space Systems.
