Demonstrating Satellite Enabled Capabilities for Network Rail Earthwork Monitoring

Closing Date:

Registration closes on Friday 28 October

Opportunity Overview:

Network Rail has issued an industry challenge to demonstrate satellite enabled capabilities for earthwork monitoring.

nr-rail-landslideNetwork Rail is seeking to improve the understanding it has on the performance of geotechnical assets and provide early identification of increased movement and likelihood of failure. This is both holistically at the network level and tactically at the asset level (100m segment of infrastructure). The challenge is to demonstrate solutions, using satellite data, which could have alerted Network Rail to conclusive asset deterioration and serviceability loss in advance of failure at the challenge incidents locations.

The demonstration will be to a panel selected by and involving Network Rail. Each demonstration can be made separately and in confidence to the panel.

nr-leighton-buzzard-slipThe opportunity is the potential to engage with Network Rail in the provision of such solutions.

The challenge is being facilitated with Innovate UK and the Satellite Applications Catapult, and satellite data is being made available via the Satellite Applications Catapult, free of charge (under terms and conditions).

Launch Date

The challenge opened on 10 October 2016.

Event Day

nr-stonegate-webThe demonstration event will take place on 28 November 2016 at Network Rail’s offices in Milton Keynes. Further details will be made available to participants nearer the time.

Requirement of Participants

Each participant is asked to demonstrate solutions for at least four incident sites detailed in the Challenge Statement; these are sites 1, 2 and 5 and at least one other site from those numbered 1 to 7 in the Challenge Statement. Each participant is requested to confirm the sites for which they will demonstrate solutions at the time of downloading the data.

All participants must be operational and be capable of delivering the solutions demonstrated.

Instructions for Participation

  1. Register to participate in challenge.
  2. Take receipt of instruction pack, challenge information and list of available data.
  3. Return signed T&Cs for data access to the Satellite Applications Catapult ( and advise which sites have been selected for demonstration, in addition to the three stated as mandatory.
  4. T&Cs will be reviewed and once accepted log in details to the site will be issued to the participant.
  5. Download all relevant data. Please note that the data set includes public and proprietary data. All listed data is being made available free of charge. Proprietary data is only being made available for the purposes of this challenge as outlined in the relevant T&Cs.
  6. Participants are at liberty to source and utilise other supplementary data if they wish.
