5G Systems Engineering Architect


We have an exciting opportunity for a 5G Systems Engineering Architect to join the Ubiquitous Communication Directorate to operate, evolve and support our 5G testbed located in Westcott Buckinghamshire. The Westcott 5G Step-Out Centre is a world class centre dedicated to the advancement and exploitation of technologies that will underpin the networks of the future. The Centre is working in partnership with some of the world’s leading organisations, infrastructure and tools providers.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who will be responsible for the ongoing development, delivery and operation of the end to end architecture, you will become a champion for the centre and develop a deep and extensive knowledge in the field of future networks and the evolution of both satellite and terrestrial networks.

This is the perfect role for an accomplished telecoms/IT/mobile networks system engineer with the ability to successfully work with a variety of end users to deliver first class operational systems to industry partners. In addition to the technical work, your problem solving, and decision making are integral to many aspects of the role.

In return we will offer you a high degree of autonomy within defined project environment, resolving potential technical or architectural conflicts in complex individual 5G projects whilst maintaining alignment with the overall 5G testbed Architecture strategy. Quick facts

This is a permanent role directly with Satellite Applications Catapult. The role will be split between two sites, Westcott in Buckinghamshire and Harwell, Didcot. We offer competitive salaries with annual reviews, end of a financial year bonus, 28 days of annual leave plus all your bank holidays paid for as an extra. Our pension scheme is competitive with a maximum of 10% contribution from us if you put in 5% and to top it all off, we have a private medical insurance as a benefit in kind. Key requirements for successful applicant

  • MSc or PhD in Networking & Data Communication / Telecommunications Systems or similar discipline
  • Demonstratable experience of mobile network architecture e.g. Evolved Packet Core (EPC), Radio Access Network (RAN) and associated ancillary services such as HSS / PCRF / IMS
  • Strong practical knowledge of virtualised infrastructure platforms (e.g. Openstack / Open Baton) for network orchestration
  • Experience of Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualisation (NFV)
  • Expertise in LTE and LTE-A architecture
  • Familiarity with:
    • Mobile network protocols (e.g. GTP / RLC / S1AP)
    • 3GPP standards
    • Coding & modulation schema’s e.g. DVB-Sx, OFDM. MC-OFDMA, SC-OFDMA
  • Accomplished and knowledgeable on Linux (Red hat / CentOS / Fedora)
