Contract: Permanent, 3 month probation and 1 month notice

The Role

The Bid Manager is responsible for working with Business Development, Programme Leads, Technical Engineers and Project Management to competitively position offers and services in the Satellite Applications field.

The Bid Manager will assemble and support multiple bid teams with the relevant technical and business knowledge required to prepare a winning bid, whilst taking ownership of the end-to-end bid process.

The jobholder will have proven capability in delivering winning, multi-million-pound complex and bespoke proposals. Ideally has a background in solutions and services and experience of bid campaign management from opportunity identification through to project delivery, working closely with Programme Leads.  They will provide valuable input into opportunity qualification, win strategies, commercial discussions and work with Project Managers and Technical Leads to determine solution delivery. Experience delivering proposals to government funded bodies (e.g Innovate UK or European Space Agency) is essential.  Experience in the completion of online submissions and to have been involved with e-bids and e-auctions is ideal.

Main Responsibilities and Activities 

  • Drive the bid process through the analysis of the bid/no bid criteria; manage quality and financial aspects of bid inputs; direct the preparation and satisfactory completion of proposals; proof-reading and editing of documents.
  • Manage multiple concurrent complex bids and tenders and plan the forward programme of opportunities and bids.
  • Work with stakeholders supporting both Catapult led opportunities and be 50% utilised working for independent SME opportunities.
  • Ensure the quality of all bid work or services provided by planning formal, documented reviews at appropriate stages, and that reviews are carried out in accordance with procedures.
  • Liaise with Sales to ensure that the win themes and unique selling points are reflected in all documentation produced and the proposal is consistent in style, language and approach (solution / strategy) throughout.
  • Work with the Proposals Manager to maintain the pipeline and provide detailed statistics for the Executive Management Team on win/loss rates/contract types.
  • Drive the team to ensure proposal content is customer focused, aligned to the published evaluation criteria and defined strategic themes.
  • Ensure the development of an effective strategy and solution with strong input into win strategies and solution development
  • Manage the bid qualification process for new opportunities and ensure all gate reviews are met.
  • Prepare and review the commercial aspects of the bid.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders (legal, finance, project management, technical) to secure their commitment and contribution to the overall bid and solution.
  • Contribute to the written proposal – both content and presentation (such as preparation of a management summary).
  • Develop and enhance the skills and knowledge of all Catapult staff involved in bidding through the application of a rigorous lesson’s learnt process, and the dissemination of best practice.
  • Support the Proposals Manager with the maintenance of a Knowledge Base library of materials, including approach and evidence and reference projects.
  • Arrange all post bid reviews with customers (both won and lost).

About You

  • A proven track record of supporting CEO / Director Level (internal and external customer).
  • Previous experience of ESA BIDS an advantage.
  • Fully conversant with the competitive marketplace.
  • Sound commercial understanding, P&L, and risk management skills.
  • Ability to manage complex, multi-workstream opportunities.
  • Solid understanding and management of governance procedures.
  • Must be an excellent communicator, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to challenge and influence key decision makers.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and use own initiative.
  • Ability to build relationships, coach and influence at all levels.
  • Ability to exercise effective judgment, discretion, sensitivity, creativity to changing needs and situations.
