The Role

As a key member of the Catapult’s Earth Observation Team, you will be part of an exciting and expanding effort to further the exploitation of data from Earth observation (EO) technologies. The role involves close engagement in cutting-edge development projects and activities at the forefront of satellite technologies. Activities will include supporting the delivery of both commercial and collaborative R&D projects, aiding the development of new methods of data processing, analysis and visualisation, and presenting results at thematic workshops. The successful candidate will enjoy working within a stimulating environment supported by the latest tools and experienced and skilled staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.

In addition, the EO Specialist will be responsible for supporting the Catapult’s Emerging Technologies Team in undertaking evaluations of ideas to investigate new technology areas, and identifying how these technologies can be placed within user-centric solutions.

Main Activities 

  • Working on a portfolio of projects involving the application of EO technologies.
  • Supporting the delivery of technical work within collaborative and commercial projects aimed at delivering user-centric solutions involving EO technologies and associated data sources.
  • Support the automation and creation of bespoke EO data handling tools and processes.
  • Supporting the development/writing of R&D proposals.
  • Writing and inputting to technical reports and technical presentations to various stakeholders/customers.
  • Supporting work on cross-space synergies (i.e. integrating with SatComms, GNSS)
  • Engaging in workshops, meetings, working groups and presenting to external entities when required.
  • Engaging in internal team and Catapult brainstorming sessions.

About You

Required Skills and Experience

  • Effective team player with excellent technical ability in the applications of EO (and its integration with non-EO data streams), with parallel interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Experience/awareness of both the operational/industrial side, as well as academia/research.
  • Knowledge and practical experience in developing and applying data analytical techniques and processes associated with machine learning and computer vision.
  • Broad knowledge across several application and technology sectors – but demonstrably expert in a subset of those.
  • Knowledge of a range of EO instrumentation approaches.
  • Direct experience of R&D proposal development, and working in partnership/consortia settings.
  • Previous customer-facing roles.
  • An ‘ideas’ person.
  • Able to re-locate or commute to Harwell area.
  • Aptitude for open and collaborative working.
