Financial Controller

Location: Harwell, Oxfordshire

Responsible to: Head of Finance

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Contract: Permanent, 3 month probation and 1 month notice

Holiday: 28 days per annum, plus statutory holidays.

The Role

  • Professional management and development of a small but effective finance team, including two direct reports.
  • Lead on the production of monthly management accounts within 10 working days of each month-end, including comments for Board reports.
  • Oversee the production of monthly project reports for issue to project managers, ensuring accurate revenue recognition and cost allocation, in line with each project’s costing model.
  • Oversee the production of monthly departmental and programme reports, and other helpful and meaningful information to the wider business.
  • Ensure sufficient segregation of duties and internal controls are in place to minimise the risk of error and fraud; and ensure payment runs are completed regularly and receipt of income is received in a timely manner.
  • Monitor, forecast and report on cash flow.
  • Oversee the preparation and conduct of the annual external audit, overseeing the production of statutory accounts in accordance with FRS102.
  • Primary responsibility for company tax compliance, to include corporate, payroll and indirect taxes.
  • Oversee reporting to Innovate UK and other funding bodies including grant claims.
  • Review, understand and provide input into the annual budget and company forecasts (performed by Strategy Manager).
  • Involvement in new bid and sales opportunities, including supporting business development teams from time to time.
  • Actively foster the reputation of the department as reliable, flexible, on time and willing to rise to challenges.
  • Support the company in collecting the information required to report KPIs.
  • Deputise for the Head of Finance in representing the company at meetings of the other Catapult companies.

About You

Required Skills and Experience

  • ACA/CIMA/ACCA qualified
  • 3-5 years post qualification industry experience, ideally with experience gained in finance manager/business partner role in a dynamic industry.
  • Experience of managing a small team
  • Ability to take a hands on approach.
  • Enthusiastic with adaptable mindset and able to challenge existing methods of working
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills: a team player.
  • High degree of IT literacy, including advanced excel skills.
  • Ability to problem solve and work to deadlines/under pressure.
  • Ability to influence key decision makers and to challenge when necessary.
  • An interest in financial compliance and accounting standards.

Desired Experience 

  • Previous experience with SAP Business by Design, or similar ERP system.
  • Project costing and reporting, including oversight of timesheet submission.
