Working hours: 37.5h a week

Contract: Permanent, 3 month probation and 1 month notice

The Role

The Head of Business Strategy manages and leads the Business Strategy Domain – who are responsible for delivering business plans and strategic insights across the Catapult’s programmes and projects, and supporting startups, SMEs and large organisations in delivering business innovation. The team consists of entrepreneurs and market analysts. The role reports directly to the Head of Domains.

The role includes being responsible for:

  • Leading client projects and engagements with businesses (of all sizes) and key stakeholders across a range of funding bodies.
  • Writing and delivering business plans, financial models and strategy documents to support the commercialisation of satellite application technologies.
  • Working with entrepreneurs to develop innovative business models, including pro forma financial models and presentations, for investment funding.
  • Responsible for the Domain’s planning, resourcing, activities and performance – managing a team of 4 direct reports.
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities.
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals.
  • Ensure quality of output and business impact with respect to written business plans that support the commercialisation of new and innovative satellite application technologies.
  • Lead strategy and consulting projects for clients. Conduct analyses, interview clients and their customers, plan and facilitate stakeholder workshops and translate conclusions into written recommendations.
  • Work closely with the Catapult’s world-leading technology teams, design and implement business plans for emerging satellite application technologies, and help to create new commercial spin-out businesses.
  • Develop innovative new business models with SMEs and for Catapult programmes and projects, including financial models and presentations for public and private investment funding.
  • Champion business innovation across the Catapult by keeping up to date with the latest business innovation methodologies and strategies.

The Catapult actively encourages “10% time”, which is a programme designed to promote entrepreneurial activity among Catapult employees. This means that employees may spend 10% of their working week on personal projects that utilise Catapult resources and align with the goal of growing the UK space sector.

About You

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years work experience in a business strategy and/or strategy consulting role.
  • Management experience of direct reports, team development and planning.
  • Extensive experience advising on and developing business strategy, costing, pricing and business models.
  • A keen interest in the economics of space and new business models of the space sector. Space sector expertise and experience is preferred, but not a necessity.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, financial and presentation skills. Candidate must have the ability to effectively communicate with entrepreneurs and executive business leaders.
  • Candidate must be highly organised, dynamic and self-motivated, with the ability to take a blank sheet of paper, an idea and deliver novel solutions.

Desired experience

  • Ideally a 2:1 undergraduate degree obtained or equivalent, Master’s degree preferred.
