Head of Domain – Project Management (Maternity Cover)

Location: Harwell, Oxfordshire

Responsible to: Domain Director

Responsible for: Line management of a team of 6

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Contract: Maternity cover to start in November, 3 month probation, 1 month notice

Holiday: 28 days per annum, plus statutory holidays.

The Role

The Head of the Project Management Domain is a pivotal role within the matrix organisation. Reporting directly to the Domain Director, the Head of Domain will be responsible for coordinating activities and managing domain specific resources across the matrix organisation. This will require the post holder to:

  • Effectively line manage a team of 6
  • Deploy effective project management tools & processes across the Matrix organisation.
  • Establish project quality assurance mechanisms and apply these as appropriate.
  • Manage risks by establishing robust risk assessment methodologies. Log, record and maintain registers for projects encompassing all activities undertaken by programmes/threads or projects.
  • Establish a strong culture of excellence within the domain organisation with a focus on timescales, budget/cost and quality of deliverables.
  • Support the tracking of projects undertaken by programmes, threads and projects.
  • Support the PMO office in the preparation of visualisation and reporting mechanisms that are in place.
  • Support the creation of strategic and collaborative proposals for new activities and apply best practice project management principles and processes.

The successful candidate will support the establishment of a strong innovation culture for the business, based on the principles of open collaboration with all partners and stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities

  • Oversee the delivery of project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Identify project management resources and assign responsibilities.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operational aspects of project management.
  • Define and drive project methodologies across the organisation.
  • Drive best practice across the domains and organisation.
  • Work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient implementation of projects.
  • Ensure project managers provide timely project status reports to stakeholders; executives, clients and stakeholders.

About You- Required Skills and Experience

  • Management Skills
    • Ability to prioritise and make effective decisions, take ownership and responsibility for appropriate actions or decisions.
    • Ability to communicate and interact effectively.
    • Experience in Coaching and Mentoring, managing performance and providing constructive, encouraging feedback to support and develop people.
    • Ability to inspire and motivate domain members, external partners and clients.
  • General Experience
    • Knowledge of current project management tools and techniques and proven ability to use these in a working environment.
    • At least 8 years of project management experience gained within a hi-tech project focused environment.
    • Extensive experience and detailed knowledge of implementing change, and the management of this change.
  • Qualifications 
    • Diploma or Degree qualified.
    • PRINCE2® Certification
    • Certificate or Diploma in Programme or Project Management (PPM)
