Here at the Catapult, we are on the hunt for an experienced Financial Controller to take on the role of Head of Finance. As someone with experience in process improvement, innovation and great people skills, you will lead us to a next stage in our growth plan where a start-up transforms to an established organisation.

You will help us establish ourselves in this high profile growing industry by utilising all your FC skills from accounting to treasury to tax to external engagement and project reporting, to name a few. As a Head of Finance for an SME, reporting directly to the CFO, you have the unique opportunity to add value and make an impact from day one on reviewing and renewing internal processes and really raise the profile of a successful finance team and the value financial information truly has.

This is a permanent role directly with Satellite Applications Catapult. We are based in Harwell with great public transport connections from all of Oxfordshire as well as London. The Role:

The Head of Finance leads the Finance team and is responsible for all areas of financial accounting and reporting, financial planning & analysis, project and grant accounting, taxation compliance, treasury management and investment appraisals.

The Finance team currently consists of 5 employees, and the role reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Main Responsibilities and Activities:

  • Leadership and people management of the finance team
  • Preparation of group financial statements, including liaison with external auditors
  • Preparation of management accounts to support business decisions
  • Support preparation of 5-year delivery plan, and lead preparation of annual budget and reforecasting process
  • Accounting for grant funding, including coordination of external grant audits, and accurate and timely claims to funding authorities
  • Implementation of enhanced project reporting systems to provide timely and accurate information to project managers
  • Managing the resource charging and overhead recovery methodology
  • Close support to the business development team with financial analysis and evaluation of bids and proposals
  • Evaluation of investment proposals
  • Leading accounts payable and receivable activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable taxation arrangements, including corporation tax, R&D tax credits, VAT

About You:

Required Skills and Experience

  • Qualified accountant with substantial post-qualification experience
  • Experience of leading a finance team
  • Excellent people management skills including coaching and feedback to drive high performance and motivation
  • Experience of project / grant funding
  • Knowledge of finance systems, ideally SAPbyDesign
  • Excellent excel and financial modelling skills
  • Good at delivering to deadlines without compromising on quality
  • Good presentation skills and comfortable engaging with internal and external stakeholders at different levels
  • Operates in a collaborative way.
