Responsible to: Business Relationship Manager, Ocean Sustainablity Business Unit

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Contract: Fixed 1 year contract

Holiday: 28 days per annum, plus statutory holidays.

About Us

The Satellite Applications Catapult promotes, develops and facilitates the commercialisation and advancement of the satellite applications industry.

The Ocean Sustainability Business Unit at the Satellite Applications Catapult is an independent innovation and technology company, created to drive economic growth through the exploitation of space. The initiative is a not for profit, collaborative project between the Satellite Applications Catapult and our partner, Pew Charitable Trusts. Our analysis focuses on adding transparency to retailers’ seafood supply chains and supporting Governments to monitor their marine reserves and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). The project was runner up in the Economist Ocean Innovation Challenge 2015 and winner of the Technology Award in the 2015 Blue Marine Foundation Ocean Awards.

The Role

The Marketing & Communications Manager will work in the Catapult’s Ocean Sustainability Business Unit on marketing and communications activities. Reporting to the Business Relationship Manager, the Marketing & Communications Manager will support the drive to engage Governments and retailers around the world to raise awareness and increase understanding of our work.

Main Responsibilities and Activities 
Fulfil and develop the marketing plan for the launch of the Business Unit as an independent entity, with its own brand name and marketing & communications campaign.


  • Execute on and further develop a marketing and communications plan for the launch the new brand: the ‘spin out’ of the business unit, planned for summer 2017
  • Manage the development of a new website
  • Regularly develop content for the website based on the stories emanating from our communications programme and update website content regularly
  • Support the brand strategy for the spin out entity, ensuring clarity of our mission and vision and differentiators in the market
  • Develop marketing materials such as briefing packs, brochures and presentation templates to promote Eyes on the Seas’ services
  • Ensure correct application of the new brand across all media and at third party events
  • Maintain and boost the global profile of the brand via Twitter and LinkedIn to increase engagement levels and attract new followers


  • Write news announcements, blogs and opinion-based articles related to the new company’s objectives
  • Support the team with contribution to ideas and content that brings our marketing and communications strategy to life
  • Assist with preparations for media relations activities including research, messaging and guidance
  • Be available to handle media enquiries and be the point of contact for external announcements and media questions
  • Support the senior team attending conferences and events by assisting with the development of speeches and presentations

About You

  • A focused, hardworking, team player with a genuine desire to contribute to achieving the mission of the Ocean Sustainability Unit
  • A passion for and excellence in writing with proven expertise in writing compelling copy for multiple channels and audiences and press releases
  • Experience in and knowledge of growing brand profile and engagement on social channels
  • Experience in liaising with media outlets on news and issues handling
  • A highly self-motivated individual with the ability to work both autonomously and within teams
  • Ability to come up with solutions to problems and to articulate solutions in a clear and persuasive manner
  • A minimum of three years’ experience working across both marketing and communications disciplines
  • Permitted to work in the UK
  • Available to work on an occasional basis outside of working hours and to travel domestically and internationally as needed
