Placement in Cooperative Satellite/HAPS Simulation using SDR

Location: Harwell, Oxfordshire

Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Contract: Placement for a minimum of 5 months and maximum of 11 months (paid)

Holiday: 28 days per rata, plus statutory holidays.

The Role

  • Study concepts and techniques proposed for Cooperative Satellite Communication Systems (performance analysis, interference management)
  • Model and Simulate Advanced Satellite and Terrestrial Communications Sub-Systems and Components
  • Design and build a generic Software Defined Radio framework to demonstrate one of the selected concept and technique
  • Build lab prototype and perform RF and tests
  • Support Networks and Systems Engineering Team in their daily project activities

About You

Required Skills and Experience

  • Knowledge of Modern Digital Communications principles (e.g. MIMO, OFDM).
  • Strong analytical and algorithmic mindset
  • Programming Languages (e.g. C/C++/C#)
  • Linux Operating System

Desired experience

  • Simulation Tools (e.g. Matlab)
  • Programming on Linux servers and embedded platforms
  • Design and Programming on distributed systems/networks
  • Hands-on experience with GNU Radio Software Development Toolkit


  • Final year Engineering (Electrical/Electronics/Telecommunications) or Computer Science studies or PhD student seeking a short term work placement
  • Good academic background
  • Good level of spoken and written English
  • Available to relocate to Harwell for the placement duration
