Populating an innovative web platform with Earth observation products and services (Ref 17/04)

Company: Geocento

Location: Harwell, Oxfordshire

Supervisor: Kim Partington

Company Description: Geocento has a mission of “making imagery accessible” and has achieved this by developing web-based technologies that connect to image suppliers, supported by a network of commercial agreements. As an independent image broker, Geocento offers expertise and wide access to imagery that is impartial and aimed at providing users with the best data for their needs.

Project Description: Geocento is leading a consortium developing a web-based application for the discovery of Earth observation (EO)-based suppliers, products and services, funded by the European Space Agency. The goal is to enhance the market for EO by making related products and services easier to find, assess and order by users who are not necessarily experts. The platform is currently in prototype form, and will be in need of populating with suppliers, products and services. The intern will help to populate the application with a wide range of commercial and free services, helping generate a critical mass of content and suppliers to enable the platform to become of interest to users.

The project will provide useful experience for the intern in requiring he or she to communicate with a wide range of suppliers, understand their offerings, work with them to make their offerings appear in the platform, and provide feedback to the platform development team in order to refine the design and performance. At the end of the project, the intern will have a dynamic and well-populated web platform to show as evidence of a productive internship.
