Company: JBA Consulting
Location: Oxfordshire / North Yorkshire
Company Description: JBA Consulting is an engineering consultancy specialising in development and use of spatial data for disaster risk management and climate change adaptation. It has teams of specialists in geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, data analytics, flood risk management, disaster resilience, software development, project management, communications, engagement, capacity building, and emergency planning. JBA Consulting has more than 20 offices across the UK and Ireland, and 4 international locations. Clients include multi-national organisations, national/local government, NGOs and private companies
Project Description: This placement will be focused on comparative assessments of the performance of Flood Foresight, a near real-time flood monitoring and forecasting system developed as a partnership between JBA and ImageCat. The project will involve compiling a catalogue of historic flood events for which flood footprint data can be generated in Flood Foresight. Data from third party sources will also be compiled as comparative data. Attention should be taken as to the source of each dataset and the methods used in compiling those data, with the limitations of each dataset being considered.
The role will involve bringing together different data sets and will require the management of large amounts of spatial data, including remote sensing and GIS layers. New GIS data will be generated where remotely-sensed imagery data can be sourced from a range of imagery providers and sensor types (optical and radar). The successful applicant will work with the technical development teams of Flood Foresight and will be expected to communicate the results both verbally to these teams and in a final report. We would encourage the final outputs to be published in a peer reviewed publication if appropriate.
The work will feed into the ongoing development and international expansion of the Flood Foresight system. Opportunities will be provided to learn more about flood risk studies within JBA as well as exposure to commercial and collaborative partners.
The applicant should have excellent skills in GIS and remote sensing. You will need to have strong communication skills as the project team is based in multiple locations across the UK. The applicant will have a good understanding of the importance of bringing diverse datasets together, data management skills and would benefit from experience with Microsoft Excel, Access or have database knowledge.
Either: GIS/RS Background with strong maths/computing skills OR Maths/physics/computer science background with basic GIS expertise and knowledge of the management of spatial data.
