isardSAT is a service firm that provides engineering and scientific research services within the Earth Observation field. The UK subsidiary is located in Guildford, Surrey, while the headquarters are in Barcelona, Catalonia.

isardSAT is involved in the design, calibration and maintenance of civil remote sensing instruments from the development of algorithms for data processing to calibration after launch and maintenance of the instrument’s hardware and processing software until decommissioning phase. isardSAT also performs studies for scientific applications with the data acquired by these instruments.

Technological projects the company is involved in can be classified as those related to on-board processing, Level 1 processing and calibration. The ESA satellites isardSAT works with for those projects are ERS-1 and ERS-2, EnviSat, CryoSat, SMOS, Sentinel-3 and Sentinel-6.

Scientific projects isardSAT is involved in are mainly in the hydrology field and relate to the following areas: irrigation, health and water resources management, flood and wild fires forecasting.

isardSAT as a company has a wide experience successfully managing complex technical projects lasting several years as can be inferred from the increasing number of ESA-awarded projects (http://www.isardsat.cat/#works)since the company creation.

Activity

The primary role of the successful candidate will be to develop and support the software team within projects with the European Space Agency which include development of Earth Observation algorithms and implementation of websites and GUIs, typically under Linux operating systems. These are most frequently developed using C/C++, Python and PHP.

Student Specification:

  • Interest in space industry
  • Good grades in maths and physics
  • Very good knowledge of C/C++, Python and Matlab
  • Have an aptitude for problem solving, self motivated: able to work as an individual or part of a team, able to communicated effectively with a range of people, able to work to tight deadlines in a logical manner and with attention to detail.

Skills and knowledge you will gain

  • Develop and support software within our projects with the European Space Agency
  • Development of Earth Observation algorithms and implementation of websites and GUIs, typically under Linux operating systems
  • Access to Remote Sensing data from many different sensors
  • Knowledge of the signal processing techniques that are going to be implemented in Sentinel 3 and Sentinel 6 satellites
  • Working for an international SME with 3 subsidiaries and people from all around the world (Barcelona, Cuba, China, Egypt, Mexico, Poland)

The Nitty Gritty

Start date to be mutually agreed (Induction Day will be at Harwell on 27 June), £1,166 per month.
