The Satellite Applications Catapult works with industry and academia to ensure that the UK secures a lead in satellite-based location services. This includes the exploitation of new global navigation satellite system (GNSS) services, such as Galileo’s Public Regulated Service (PRS), and the creation of highly resilient position, navigation and timing systems for national infrastructure and business-critical satellite applications.
Society is increasingly dependent upon applications that utilise global navigation satellite systems to support key national infrastructure and business processes. In future, as autonomous systems become more common, such applications will need to be increasingly resilient. This resilience is likely to be provided by a combination of satellite navigation systems with local sensors and reference systems, while in a few years it will also be possible to navigate when out of satellite coverage.
