Between 5 May and 19 May 2019 the LATAM-III mission for the Mars Society Peru, will be operating at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in the Utah Desert.
The mission is sponsored by Satellite Applications Catapult, The University of the West of England, CERN, Airvision, and IUAV among others. Throughout the mission, each member of the crew will be conducting research in different areas that will contribute to the future of space exploration.
The experimental areas include astrophysics, engineering, space farming, and human factors. Over the two weeks of the mission, the crew will utilise the remote location of the MDRS Observatory in order to generate colour-magnitude diagrams of selected open clusters, look for asteroids, generate images of deep-sky objects, and to investigate the solar chromosphere. This will be achieved through the use of the MDRS-14 robotic telescope, the MDRS-WF astrophotography instrument, and the MDRS Musk solar telescope. The crew will also be conducting experiments on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Photogrammetry, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Inspection, and Rover. The viability of space farming will be tested by exploring the effects of Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) on production yields and growth.
