Space South Central

Space South Central is one of the largest regional space clusters in the UK. It is a partnership between industry and academia, designed to accelerate space business growth, foster an environment of innovation, grow the reputation of the south-central region and contribute to national prosperity. Businesses like Airbus, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, In-Space Missions, Spur Electron, and SSTL are among many located in the Space South Central area. In addition, the South East is responsible for £3.03 bn of all UK space-related income, involving contributions from more than 120 space organisations in the Hampshire, Surrey and the Isle of Wight areas.

North Coast Space Cluster

The North Coast Space Cluster supports UK and Scottish government objectives for growing the space sector. Home to the commercial spaceport, Space Hub Sutherland, the Northern Space Cluster could create 740 jobs in the Highlands and Islands and boost the regional economy by £56m per year by the end of this decade.

Space East

Space East is the UK’s newest space cluster, and brings together leaders from across industry, research and Government in the East of England to develop and champion exciting new opportunities in space technology. The applications of space and satellite technologies stretch across the region’s leading industries, including food and agriculture, offshore wind, coastal and marine science, health and social care, and transport and logistics. Combined with existing technology strengths and innovation assets such as Adastral Park, Norwich Research Park, Hethel Innovation, OrbisEnergy, CEFAS, University of East Anglia and University of Suffolk, there are a range of opportunities for organisations to join their growing space cluster. They are already leaders in areas such as artificial intelligence, 5G communications, microgravity R&D, agri-tech, marine and life sciences and health tech, all offering exciting potential to unlock space-related commercial opportunities.

Midlands Space Cluster

Bringing the East and West Midlands space clusters together as a single entity within the whole Midlands region, the Midlands Space Cluster builds on existing activities and initiatives, such as the Midlands Innovation Space Group, the Midlands Enterprise Group and the major space hub in the region - Space Park Leicester (SPL).

Harwell Space Cluster

Harwell Campus was formerly the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, which was created after the Second World War on the site of RAF Harwell and was the main centre for atomic energy research and development in the UK. Today, the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus is a 700-acre science and technology campus in Oxfordshire, England. Over 6,000 people are employed at the campus overall, in over 240 public and private sector organisations, and working across sectors including Space, Clean Energy, Life Sciences and Quantum Computing. The Space Cluster has been at Harwell for over 10 years, with key stakeholders such as the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s RAL Space, UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency and the Satellite Applications Catapult. It has matured into a globally-significant space hub, and is home to a community of 100 space organisations, collectively employing a growing population of over 1,400 people.

Cornwall Space Cluster

With a dedicated horizontal launch site, one of the world’s most capable satellite ground stations, deep space communications, EO and flight testing, Cornwall’s Space Cluster is rapidly becoming a world leading technology destination for businesses. The Cornwall space sector has experienced a 164% growth since 2010, and expects to generate £1bn additional economic value by 2030.

North West Space Cluster

Building on the North West of England’s established space sector, including the European Space Tribology Laboratory, the ESA Business Incubation Centre, and the global HQ of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), the North West Space Cluster works locally, nationally, and internationally to help establish the UK as a leading space superpower. As the birthplace of Graphene, the region hosts the largest advanced materials cluster of organisations in the UK – including Unilever, the Materials Innovation Factory and the flagship Henry Royce Institute, and also has an established and expanding cyber & defence portfolio.

Space Wales

The Space Wales Cluster coordinates the space ecosystem in Wales, which includes an environment suited for spaceplane operations, advanced optical tracking and telemetry, as well as 7100 sqkm of segregated airspace with no ceiling. Space Wales has established a Leadership Group to shape the outputs for delivering a new space strategy for Wales and is committed to the long-term development of the growth strategy for Wales. The group works closely with the Welsh Government and liaises with the other Devolved Administrations, UK Government, Local Authorities, the UK Space Agency, Aerospace Growth Partnership & Defence Group Partnership, etc., in order to help reinforce complementarity between the Welsh strategy and national ambitions.

The Westcott Space Cluster is building an international reputation for supporting rocket and satellite-enabled demonstrator projects for real-world applications in Westcott’s Enterprise Zone. Companies within the Space Cluster focus on propulsion, UAV development, in-orbit manufacturing, and next-generation resilient communication networks.

Arc for Space

Arc for Space is an initiative spearheaded by world-class institutions from across the Oxford-Cambridge Arc to address global challenges through the implementation of transformational technologies with the UK space sector. Top representatives from these institutions have come together to pool expertise and capabilities that can support UK-wide partnerships focused on global sustainability. It believes global challenges will only be solved by the financing of ambitious innovation and committed collaboration, and that the solutions lie in space.

Space Hub Yorkshire

Space Hub Yorkshire is a coordinator of Space activity and a driver of investment across the whole of the Yorkshire region. It is a catalyst for new satellite and geospatial data markets, a source of Ssace expertise, a facilitator of new collaborations, a champion for space start-ups and an advocate for space research and industry opportunities. Through the establishment of their Virtual Space Campus and the development of bespoke skills programmes for industry, Space Hub Yorkshire delivers practical and achievable actions based on regional strengths such as Earth observation and advanced computer techniques, advanced manufacturing, and secure communications. Through its work with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the four Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), it provides a seamless route for overseas investors to capitalise on the opportunities that a population of nearly 6m people can bring.

Space Scotland

Space Scotland is an industry-led group, with representation from business, academia, public sector and government stakeholders. With a collaborative ‘Team Scotland’ approach, it provides a single voice to represent the collective Scottish industrial space community, and sectoral-level leadership and support to enable, promote and grow the Scottish space sector. Scotland currently employs 20% of the UK’s space workforce, is the largest producer of small satellites in Europe, and has extensive downstream capabilities. With several spaceports under development, Scotland will soon be able to offer a full end-to-end solution for satellite design, manufacture, launch, and application of satellite data, positioning it as a strategic location and European leader for commercial space developments.

Space North East England

Space North East England is a community of over 50 businesses, academia and organisations in North East England. They spans from the Scottish borders in Northumberland right through Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley. All five regional Universities in the region – Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside – are active in this sector by way of research and skills development. The North East Space Leadership Group, which consists of representatives from industry, academia and public sector, drive the vision and strategy to enable business growth, as well as more and better jobs through the Space sector.

Northern Ireland Space

The Northern Ireland Space Cluster built its foundations on a proud regional heritage of engineering excellence, contributing around £1.3 billion to the UK aerospace industry. The Northern Ireland Space Special Interest Group (NISSIG) was created to initially provide a voice for regional engineering and research stakeholders to promote their respective capabilities and identify opportunities for business and research growth and development within the space sector. Today, the Northern Irish space ecosystem is rapidly growing, and sees the participation of several key players (e.g. Airbus, Boeing, BAE Systems, Thales, Raytheon Group) as well as important academic institutions.

Space West is a regional consortium of academic and industry partners accelerating growth and innovation in the space sector. We are passionate about delivering opportunities and facilities that will enhance our eco-system and grow investment in the region.

Funded in part by the UK Space Agency, each Cluster is integral to the wider community, which includes valuable networks of innovators and investors, academic institutions and industrial partners who collectively showcase the strengths of the UK space sector while simultaneously levelling up the economy.
Each Cluster is supported by our online Space Enterprise Community platform (see below) and our national network of Space Enterprise Labs (see below) as well as our new Investor Launchpad (see below), designed to signpost potential investors to particular clusters and projects.
