Local Growth manager – Business Incubation and Support

UK Space Agency

portia.bircher@ukspaceagency.gov.uk

After much review and consultation, the UK Space Agency published a request for proposals for a Business Support delivery partner in September 2020. Our objective is to develop a world-class programme of business support focused on giving space companies and entrepreneurs the help they need to build resilience and grow their businesses. Portia will be introducing the winner of the competitive tender, a partnership between Entrepreneurial Spark and the University of Strathclyde, who will deliver the programme this year.

Cornwall Space

gail@aerospacecornwall.co.uk

Did you know that Cornwall is leading some of the biggest space innovations currently taking place in the UK? With a dedicated horizontal launch site, one of the world’s most capable satellite ground stations managing deep space communications, earth observation, flight testing and satellite launches, Cornwall is rapidly becoming a world-leading technology destination for businesses. The Cornwall Space Cluster also has access to dedicated R&D funding. We’re looking for collaborators, large or small to join us to see how we can accelerate development in the space sector as we gear up for satellite launch in 2022. If you’re looking to collaborate with satellite launch operators such as Virgin Orbit, space technology developers or satellite applications businesses we’d love to hear from you.

Radtest

richard.sharp@radtest.co.uk

Some of you may know the former Cobham RAD Europe Ltd, which traded at Harwell from 2013, offering radiation testing services. In October 2020, an MBO created Radtest Ltd, now an independent SME. Radtest provides contract radiation testing services for space, nuclear, high-energy physics and broader industrial fields. To illustrate our customer base, we recently won a five-year frame contract from CERN and have an existing frame contract with ESA for radiation testing. Our location at Harwell illustrates how important space is to our business and we are proud to be the only test house outside the USA with full DLA laboratory suitability for total dose testing under MIL-STDs. We are happy to help with all kinds of requirement, from advice on an individual component for a specific application up to full-scale testing campaigns. Do come and talk to us.

SEPnet

k.pearson@surrey.ac.uk

Based at the Uni of Surrey, I represent SEPnet (South East Physics Network), a consortium of 9 university physics departments. We organise over 80 summer placements a year for physics and maths undergraduate and PhD students. We are looking for 8-week plus projects in industry or research in areas such as data analysis, mathematical modelling, product design and testing or science communication. The scheme is aimed at any organisation that can offer valuable business experience, including large companies, SMEs, start-ups, research institutions, charities and NGOs. The work doesn’t necessarily need to be physics or maths specific. The benefits to employers include: early access to bright, numerate students with excellent problem-solving and IT skills; the opportunity to carry out projects you wouldn’t normally have time for and a fresh perspective on your business challenges. Advertising, admin and placement support is handled by SEPnet and there is some funding for SMEs. For more information, email: veronica.benson@sepnet.ac.uk or visit http://www.sepnet.ac.uk/students-employers/information-for-employers/, where you can register a placement project, ideally by 12th February. Early projects will be prioritised.
