The Arc in Space

25 February - 1:30PM - 2:30PM
By 2030 the UK space sector could be worth £40bn per year. Find out how the Arc Universities are contributing to this major industry.

“Space is for everybody. It’s not just for a few people in science or math, or for a select group of astronauts. That’s our new frontier out there, and it’s everybody’s business to know about space.” Christa McAuliffe, December 6, 1985

Building a Space Gateway for the whole of the UK from the Arc has been identified as a key project in the recently launched Arc Economic Prospectus. The Oxford to Cambridge Arc plays host to clusters of space-related activity, including the Satellite Applications Catapult, as well as the propulsion and testing centres at Wescott and Harwell. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the space industry is more important than ever, with Universities key to building the capacity of this major national industry of the future.

Realising the full potential benefits that could be delivered in the next phase will take a supreme and well-coordinated effort from academia, industry, and Government. This webinar is your opportunity to hear directly from some of those leading the way.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Dr Simon Jackman, Senior Innovation Fellow, Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences and Social Sciences, University of Oxford
  • Professor Monica Grady CBE, Professor of Planetary and Space Sciences, The Open University
  • Lucy Edge, Chief Operating Officer, Satellite Applications Catapult
  • Dr Michael Obersteiner, Director of the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford
  • Dr Steve Hobbs, Director, Cranfield Space Research Centre, Cranfield University.
