Advanced mobile communication technology developed for UK Emergency Services
The Satellite Applications Catapult, an independent technology and innovation company, today hosted a technology showcase event for the Emergency Services to demonstrate the advancement in mobile communications for the connected vehicle and the communication tools they may use in the future.
The showcase event, which took place at our headquarters in Harwell, Oxford, attracted over 100 attendees from Emergency Service organisations across the UK, as well as from other invited groups. It demonstrated the concept of developing an open communication platform that makes use of the best available communication services available at any specific time and location.
The choice of communication services is made automatically by an intelligent router installed in the connected vehicle, which enables the user to continue with the task in hand while the technology works in the background, switching automatically between communications services, as required. This concept was designed to deliver as close to ‘communication everywhere’ as possible, as well as enable applications that will improve the effectiveness of future police, fire and ambulance forces.
Stuart Martin, CEO of the Catapult said, “This was a very innovative communication technology showcase, focused on emergency service users, in-vehicle and handheld devices, including a simulated control room, showing users how each service could be used. This included 3G, 4G, satellite communications and Wi-Fi.”

The Catapult was requested to organise this event, as it is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that is ideally placed to bridge the gap between industry and the user community.
