Yesterday’s healthcare workshop in Lima, which focused on improving healthcare provision in remote areas of the Amazonia, has been praised by the Peruvian Minister of Health, Patricia Garcia Funegra.

Organised by Peru’s Cayetano Heredia University in collaboration with the Satellite Applications Catapult, twhe event was part of the healthcare project in which both organisations are working together to improve healthcare provision via enhanced connectivity for mobile healthcare facilities and combined with the use of e-Health and mobile Health (m-Health) solutions.

Minister Garcia Funegra, along with Dr Ciro Magui¤a Vargas (Vice rector Of Research – Cayetano Heredia University) and Esperanza Reyes Solari (Dean, School of Public Health – Cayetano Heredia University), praised the initiative and the collaboration between Peru and the UK, as well as thanked all the relevant stakeholders for attending the workshop.

Other workshop attendees included representatives from: MINSA (Peru’s Ministry of Health); MIDIS (Peru’sÿMinistry of Development and Social Inclusion); EsSalud health provider; Pontifical Catholic University of Peru; and the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute. A representative from The Amazon Hope programme explained his experiences working as an NGO in the Amazonia.

Stuart Martin, CEO of the Satellite Applications Catapult, said: “The workshop gave us the opportunity to further understand current telemedicine and connectivity infrastructure in remote areas of Peru, which will help us identify where UK industry can bring added value for future implementation or improvements of Peruvian health services.”

The project is supported by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Prosperity Fund programme.
