The Satellite Applications Catapult, an independent innovation and technology company, will be running its latest Inventorthon – a high energy “hackathon”-style event – in Harwell on 28-29 June 2014, as part of the Catapult’s continued drive to encourage the generation of new ideas, solutions and technologies, utilising space data and technologies.

The two-day technology development event will provide participants with access to the latest space data and intellectual property to then build technical solutions to a challenge, or join forces with others to develop a winning idea.

Inventorthon is open to anyone who would like to participate – including software developers, engineers, technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, and students – and who has a passion to help make a difference to our world.

The challenges include:

  • Asset Tracking of Individual Shipments
  • Ground Truthing of Earth Observation Data
  • Monitoring environmental changes in the Yangtze River basin
  • Visualisation of Satellite Capabilities Challenge
  • Illicit Production and Transportation of Cocaine in Latin America
  • How to transform your Smartphone into a space equipment?
  • Applications of Authenticated GNSS
  • Crowd sourcing of GNSS data

Stuart Martin, CEO of the Satellite Applications Catapult, said: “This latest Inventorthon is part of our ongoing series of hackathons which provide an innovation platform for people to collaborate to solve challenges using space technologies. Previous events have generated some fantastic ideas which exploit the benefits of satellite applications in other markets sectors. One of our great successes is the Weathersafe Coffee application which was developed to provide early warning climate information for Rwandan farmers. This is trialling now and planned to roll out later this year.”

Stuart continued, “This next Inventorthon has some really interesting challenges on offer and along with the broad mix of participants, we are confident it will generate some exciting ideas which the Catapult can help develop into solid business solutions in the near future.”
