Satellite technology gets top billing at ITS Europe 2016

Satellite technology will be high on the agenda at the Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) European Congress in Glasgow from 6-9 June, with the Satellite Applications Catapult’s unique Emergency Services Vehicle Demonstrator on display.
In collaboration with partners, with whom the Catapult is working on ongoing projects, we will be showcasing what satellite technologies can deliver for Transport/ITS, including:
- Seamless vehicular connectivity – (mobile satellite communications service and cellular) for Emergency Services vehicles (Police and Fire)
- Low-cost connectivity for transport infrastructure (VMS)
- Remote immobilisation of vehicles
- Robust positioning/GNSS demonstrator (GNSS Demo Centre)
- Vehicular Emergency Call over satellite (I_HeERO project)
Demonstrations will take place outside the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) from 10:30-17:00 on 7-8 June, and 10:30-12:30 on 9 June. The Catapult will also be on stand E20.
Stuart Martin, CEO of the Satellite Applications Catapult, said: “The Congress provides an invaluable opportunity for us to engage with new audiences and promote satellite communication as a critical part of a robust and always available vehicular communication fabric.
“As was evident from the success of ITS World Congress 2015 in Bordeaux, there is a growing appetite for satellite technologies within the ITS community – beyond the well-known positioning/GNSS technology. In Glasgow, the focus is on new services enabled through the use of all space technologies – including communications and Earth observation – either in their own right or more importantly in conjunction with complementary terrestrial technologies.”
As a member of the Congress’s programme committee, the Catapult has again helped shape and promote the space agenda, following the sector’s profile at the World Congress in Bordeaux last autumn.
During the Congress, the Catapult’s Chief Technology Officer, Paul Febvre, will be participating in an Executive Session on space alongside industry leaders, discussing new ITS services enabled by satellite technologies (8 June, 11:00-12:30). Additionally, the Catapult has organised and will be moderating a special interest session about “ITS Connectivity – a future with 5G and satellite technology” (8 June, 14:00-15:30).
The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) will also be exhibiting at the conference. Focusing on Intelligent Mobility, the TSC will be featuring its prototype driverless vehicle, Virtual Reality for Transport applications and its sentiment mapping planning tool. The TSC will be located at E40.
