The North Coast Space Cluster supports UK and Scottish government objectives for growing the space sector. Home to the commercial spaceport, Space Hub Sutherland, the Northern Space Cluster could create 740 jobs in the Highlands and Islands and boost the regional economy by £56m per year by the end of this decade.

Space Scotland is an industry-led group, with representation from business, academia, public sector and government stakeholders. With a collaborative ‘Team Scotland’ approach, it provides a single voice to represent the collective Scottish industrial space community, and sectoral-level leadership and support to enable, promote and grow the Scottish space sector. Scotland currently employs 20% of the UK’s space workforce, is the largest producer of small satellites in Europe, and has extensive downstream capabilities. With several spaceports under development, Scotland will soon be able to offer a full end-to-end solution for satellite design, manufacture, launch, and application of satellite data, positioning it as a strategic location and European leader for commercial space developments.

Space North East England is a community of over 50 businesses, academia and organisations in North East England. They spans from the Scottish borders in Northumberland right through Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Tees Valley. All five regional Universities in the region – Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside – are active in this sector by way of research and skills development. The North East Space Leadership Group, which consists of representatives from industry, academia and public sector, drive the vision and strategy to enable business growth, as well as more and better jobs through the Space sector.

Convening the cross-sector capabilities of Greater Manchester, the Liverpool City Region, Cheshire, Cumbria, and Lancashire, this Cluster of over 250 organisations builds upon an established space sector, including the European Space Tribology Laboratory, the ESA Business Incubation Centre, and the global HQ of the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), to support the development of the UK as a leading space superpower.nnHome to the largest defence manufacturing ecosystem in the UK, the North West of England is also home of the National Cyber Force, a significant GCHQ presence, and the nation’s most powerful industry accessible supercomputer, located at the Hartree Centre. In addition, as the birthplace of Graphene, the region boasts world class expertise in Materials science and innovation and has unique capabilities in nuclear materials for deep space applications.

Space Hub Yorkshire is a coordinator of Space activity and a driver of investment across the whole of the Yorkshire region. It is a catalyst for new satellite and geospatial data markets, a source of Ssace expertise, a facilitator of new collaborations, a champion for space start-ups and an advocate for space research and industry opportunities. Through the establishment of their Virtual Space Campus and the development of bespoke skills programmes for industry, Space Hub Yorkshire delivers practical and achievable actions based on regional strengths such as Earth observation and advanced computer techniques, advanced manufacturing, and secure communications. Through its work with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the four Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), it provides a seamless route for overseas investors to capitalise on the opportunities that a population of nearly 6m people can bring.

NI Space is a regional space cluster that has been established to promote and support regional capabilities in both the national and international space sector. We facilitate meaningful knowledge exchange and develop collaborations with a wide range of stakeholders to maximise potential, drive economic growth and progress the space sector in Northern Ireland. The cluster is supported by the Northern Ireland Space Office (NISO) workings closely with InvestNI, the Regional Business development Agency, ADS the national Aerospace, Defence and Security trade association and the UK Space Agency to signpost opportunities for collaboration and commercial growth.

The Space Wales Cluster coordinates the space ecosystem in Wales, which includes an environment suited for spaceplane operations, advanced optical tracking and telemetry, as well as 7100 sqkm of segregated airspace with no ceiling. Space Wales has established a Leadership Group to shape the outputs for delivering a new space strategy for Wales and is committed to the long-term development of the growth strategy for Wales. The group works closely with the Welsh Government and liaises with the other Devolved Administrations, UK Government, Local Authorities, the UK Space Agency, Aerospace Growth Partnership & Defence Group Partnership, etc., in order to help reinforce complementarity between the Welsh strategy and national ambitions.

Cornwall Space Cluster acts as a vehicle to showcase the assets, businesses and activity which is aligned with Cornwall’s Local Enterprise Partnership’s Data & Space strategy. Set up in 2018, it brings together key regional stakeholders such as Goonhilly Earth Station, Spaceport Cornwall, University of Exeter and the UK largest unitary authority, Cornwall Council..

Space South Central is one of the largest regional space clusters in the UK. It is a partnership between industry and academia, designed to accelerate space business growth, foster an environment of innovation, grow the reputation of the south-central region and contribute to national prosperity. Businesses like Airbus, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, In-Space Missions, Spur Electron, and SSTL are among many located in the Space South Central area. In addition, the South East is responsible for £3.03 bn of all UK space-related income, involving contributions from more than 120 space organisations in the Hampshire, Surrey and the Isle of Wight areas.

The Harwell Space Cluster forms an integral part of the UK’s Space Sector and has grown into a dynamic ecosystem of 100 space organisations employing over 1,600 people anchored to the Harwell National Science and Innovation Campus. The Campus is committed to fostering multidisciplinary research and innovation, enabled through its unique public and private joint venture partners. Brookfield Asset Management the private side of the partnership, whilst the UK Atomic Energy Authority and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) form the public side.nnThe gravitational heart of our cluster is one of STFC’s National Laboratories – RAL Space. With more than 60 years of expertise, the lab has helped over 210 instruments into space, through access to its leading facilities, skills and expertise. These continue to grow to service the scaling UK Space Sector, with the new National Satellite Test Facility opening later this year. Key stakeholders include the European Space Agency (ESA) through their European Centre for Satellite Communications and Telecommunications (ECSAT), the ESA Business Incubation Centre which has supported over 100 space start-ups, the Satellite Applications Catapult and the UK Space Agency which now proudly hosts its headquarters here.Harwell has enabled companies over the last decade to start with a couple of employees in an office to scale in size into their own dedicated building on site. Support for incubation, funding, technical partnerships and expertise offers cluster members a unique place to grow.
