November Satuccino

Thank you to everyone who attended the Satuccino on Wednesday 1 November. See below for the updates.

Catapult Updates

1. Louise Hetherton, AMSIT Project

The AMSIT project has been commissioned by the UK Government’s Building Information Modelling (BIM) task group who have a need to monitor critical infrastructure, among all UK structures.

The basis of the project is to independently determine if Satellite and IOT technology can provide a reliable and sustainable solution for both improving the monitoring of bridges and lowering the costs to do so.

Catapult are working alongside academics from the University of Cambridge’s Engineering department to monitor several locations in central London. Currently we are working to install radar corner reflectors on Waterloo bridge.

We are using data from Sentinel-1, Cosmo-Skymed and TerraSAR X along with various IOT data feeds from existing kit at each location. All the data will be consolidated and represented in a 3d visualisation tool, and will hopefully prove one way or another if SAR is useful for remote monitoring of critical national infrastructure. A successful outcome will be the creation of a new market for InSAR services.

Through the project we are also developing and building on the relationship with the BIM group and hope to identify other requirements they have that may be aided by the use of Satellite data. The hope is to open up other service areas – so if you have ideas of how you would like to work with BIM please do get in touch.

Company Updates

1. MeVitae – Riham Satti

The choices we make affect every aspect of our lives. With our brain consisting of billions of neurons and infinite possibilities, which combination will dictate the future of decision-making and companies? Riham Satti, a computational neuroscientist and CEO of MeVitae, gives a tour into how machines and humans can work together via Augmented Intelligence for intelligent decision-making in the space industry e.g. satellite semantic querying, predicting anomoly in data and more.

2. Sterling Geo Conference 2017 – Andy Wells

The Sterling Geo Annual Conference is coming up on 11-12 December, and will include speakers from Amazon Web Services, Skeye in the UK, Satellite Applications Catapult, Safe Software, Hexagon Geospatial, UK Space Agency, Europa Technologies and Malstow Geospatial. Click here for full details of the event.

3. Sent Into Space – Alex Keen

Sent Into Space are Europe’s leading high altitude launch experts. Having conducted over 300 near-space balloon flights over 6 years of operation with a 100% payload recovery rate, we are now offering a unique testing platform for high altitude launches.

Testing your equipment on a near-space balloon flight allows you to demonstrate orbital viability in conditions comparable to LEO in a fraction of the timeframe and at a fraction of the cost of a traditional sounding rocket flight.

In addition to complete flight management, monitoring and retrieval services, they can also offer guidance and aid in payload design and construction, analysis of results, sample capture and scientific research and post-processing of data.

They also provide in-house videography and editing to provide an arresting visual demonstration of a result – surprisingly helpful for generating press coverage and securing future funding!

4. Global Geo-Intelligence Solutions Ltd – Ropo Ogundipe

Global Geo-Intelligence Solutions (GGIS) is a geospatial data analytics company. GGIS converts geospatial data into decision support information. They have a passion to use satellite technology to empower communities, policy makers and others. They combine geospatial data from a wide range of inputs such as satellite earth observation data, GNSS, weather data, crowd sourced information and IoT sensors and analyse these using statistical and machine learning techniques to derive insights, trends and decision support information for the end user.

Increasing global populations and changing weather patterns requires that we secure food supply, increase farming productivity and reduce wastage. Their Foresight Crops service provides advance information on the risk of insect infestation & insight on soil productivity to farmers and other stakeholders. Foresight Crops won the 2015 Copernicus Masters University Challenge. To find out more check out www.gg-is.com or contact ropo.ogundipe@gg-is.com

5. Geomatic Ventures – Andrew Sowter

GVL are an innovative EO company specialising in the processing of high volumes of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to derive land motion parameters in urban and rural areas alike. We are a spin-out from the University of Nottingham using innovative, patent pending, technology. We are working in a number of market sectors, such as oil and gas, transport infrastructure and the environment and are working on projects with stakeholders such as Network Rail, the Environment Agency and the Coal Authority.

6. Spotlight Data – Tom Parsons

Spotlight Data provide data analytics software and services to large organisations. We use machine learning, text mining, image processing, data analysis and cloud services to help clients make sense of the data they possess. We specialise in creating scalable containerised applications and use Docker and Kubernetes to process data intensive workloads. Areas we are interested in include parallelisation of data processing tasks, GPUs and creating structured data from unstructured sources.

Cluster Updates

1. New ESA Kick-start – Tony Sephton

New call open for Kick-start activities dedicated to the theme “Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions”. Click here for full details.

Upcoming Events

1. Catapult and Level39 Satellite Data Revolution and Tech at Level39

Join us at Level39 on November 30 for an evening of networking between the space and tech communities. Level39 is an accelerator based in Canary Wharf at the centre of the finance hub of London. This is a great opportunity to meet entrepreneurs, and hear short pitches from both communities in a Satuccino-style format. Click here for full details.

2. Coffee Mornings

See below for dates and speakers for the coming coffee mornings, which are held at 10:00 in the Catapult kitchen.

8 November – Terrabotics
22 November – Qurus/Spottit
13 December – Engineering Space Businesses

3. Future Cities Mission to Australia

Applications are open for Innovate UK’s 2018 Future Cities delegation to Australia. The mission – taking place from 12-16 March 2018 – is a valuable opportunity to build new business collaborations overseas. Deadline for application is 24 November 2017. Click here for full details.

4. Introducing… Innovate UK Innovation Loans

To introduce innovation loans, Innovate UK are holding a series of events across the UK. These events will explain the rationale for innovation loans and where they sit in the landscape of innovation support, outline the key features and obligations of the loans and explain how they will be delivered and operated.

Innovation loans events will be held (in each case from 1:30pm to 4:30pm) in:

6 November – Cardiff
7 November – Belfast

5. UK Space Agency Launch Roadshow

UKSA want to hear from organisations that could operate in, supply or enable this new market, so they are hitting the road, with briefings and workshops from Government officials and industry experts.

The aim is to share thoughts and gather feedback, which will inform the Government’s future vision for UK launch services and regulatory policy. If you operate in, supply or help support the development of a space launch market in the UK, then join the discussion. Click here for more information and to register.

6. Unilever’s Package Challenge

We are calling for interested companies, entrepreneurs and academics to participate in a two day Hack and Pitch event facilitated by InnovateUK, to propose potential solutions to three key challenges raised by Unilever. Click here for more information.
