What is IOSM?

In-Orbit Servicing and Manufacturing (IOSM) covers a range of activities focusing on in-space capabilities. The Catapult’s Access to Space team is leading our IOSM capabilities with experts in the areas of robotics, manufacturing, in-orbit operations, and much more. We are keen to work with you on developing your in-space products, services, and solutions, through our knowledge and experience as well as specialist facilities and equipment.

OUR CURRENT CAPABILITIES

Manufacturing, Prototyping, and In-Orbit Control

As well as the above mentioned expertise among the Access to Space team, the Catapult is also offering businesses use of specialist manufacturing and prototyping equipment at the Westcott Innovation Centre and flight operations support at the In-Orbit Servicing Control Centre at our Head Office in Harwell.

All of our facilities and equipment are available for use by you, in partnership with our technicians to develop skills, or we can complete tasks or projects for you using our equipment. This flexible approach to support aims to open up opportunities to all UK space businesses developing new products, regardless of organisation size or experience in these specialist skill areas. If you would like to discuss a project or hiring of any of our facilities please get in touch with us using the contact details below.

COMING SOON…

… our new IOSM facility

We are currently expanding our physical capabilities to include a new, purpose built facility to verify, validate and demonstrate future in-orbit operations including manufacturing, servicing, inspection, repair and assembly. The key features of this facility will be the state of the art in-orbit simulation robots complete with digital twin capabilities, and the metal additive manufacturing and 3D printing machines.

Alongside the technical equipment, the IOSM Facility has collaboration spaces and product development labs, and will continually be developed to be the ideal place for you to innovate, test, and develop your commercial solutions. It will be located in a brand new building withing the Westcott Space Cluster on Westcott Venture Park, Buckinghamshire, situated close to the Catapult’s Innovation Centre and Future Networks Development Centre. Located in the same new building will be the Catapult’s expanded Healthy and Agri Living Labs.

We are looking forward to inviting you to use this centre to develop and test your new on the ground technologies (such as rocket engines), in-orbit systems (e.g. new flight solutions), and beyond Earth (such Lunar technologies). Keep an eye out for more information on the specifications and opening dates in Spring 2022.
