Catapult leads workshop on latest technology trends for operational situational awareness

The Satellite Applications Catapult, an independent technology and innovation company, has led a cross-industry workshop on the “Role of Satellites in Operational Situational Awareness”.
Hosted by conference specialist SMi, the workshop explored current and future satellite technology capabilities in Operational Situational Awareness (OSA), their potential applications, and the challenge of bringing together the breadth of data sources to meet the needs of different markets.
The Catapult opened the event with an overview of the market and key technology trends followed by a series of presentations from leading UK companies including Clyde Space, Cobham, SSTL – Airbus, Telespazio VEGA UK and UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UK ATC).
Presentations covered subjects such as: Nano and micro satellites; Small satellites, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and inter-satellite communications; Payloads (instruments) for small satellites; Operations and ground stations; and Platforms and applications, with attendees particularly interested in UK capabilities to integrate multiple data sets in areas such as illegal fishing, de-mining and agriculture.
Speaking at the event, Vladimir Stoiljkovic, Business Development Manager, Satellite Applications Catapult, said: “The workshop was an ideal platform for knowledge exchange and delegates saw the value of sharing UK expertise and capabilities on Operational Situational Awareness with international markets.”
As a result of positive feedback from organisers and attendees, the Catapult is now planning a series of follow-on OSA knowledge exchange workshops with a view to work with overseas markets.
